BEST DIM SUM
Ding Dim 1968
(Shop No.A, 14D Elgin Street, Soho, Central)
Why: Authentic, creative and incredible variety

Being Dim Sum City, what qualifies for the “best” is extremely subjective. Longtime Hong Kong Belongers won’t look further than the dim sum restaurant in City Hall. Uptown traffic will mention Mott 32 and 1 Harbour Road, the Chinese restaurant at the Grand Hyatt. We fell in love with Ding Dim 1968 the day it opened. Sure, you can have your traditional dim sum, but without trying to be too clever, there are variations on a theme we have never seen nor tasted before anywhere else. And now that we have: There’s dim sum and there’s them sum. Ding Dim 1968 is Them Sum.

BEST STEAK

BEST NEW AREAS TO EXPLORE
Sheung Wan and Sai Ying Pun

Why: There’s much to explore- restaurants, bars, funky boutiques- and always the chance of meeting interesting people. Has a small creative French community in the area. Check out our favourite “shopamore” in the area- Mahka.

THE BEST HAINAN CHICKEN RICE
The Grand Cafe of the Grand Hyatt Hotel
(Lobby Level, Grand Hyatt Hong Kong, 1 Harbour Road)
Why: Apart from the perfectly steamed chicken, the quite rare accompanying chilli sauce made with Hainanese chilli seeds…

BEST BURGERS
Burger Joys

Why: The name says it all!

THE MOST DIFFERENT CHINESE RESTAURANT
Manchu China
(G/F, 33 Elgin Street, SOHO, Central)
Formerly known as Bistro Manchu until an ex staff overthrow and takeover.

Why: The brilliant cuisine led by the Sizzling Cumin Beef, the Steamed or Pan-Fried Vegetarian, Scallops or Pork Dumplings, the Crispy Leg Of Lamb, and the extremely frank, helpful and honest service of Tom, the Manager, pictured below.

Favourite line: “That’s enough. Don’t order too much now. Can have more later.”

THE BEST WHISKEY BAR
Stockton
(G/F., 32 Wyndham St., Central)
Why: The atmosphere, the people, the choice of whiskies and the snacks, especially the crabmeat dip.
