Asking for a tip and hearing, “just follow horses ridden by Douglas Whyte and Zac Purton” is easier said than done as it comes down to WHICH horses.

With both jockeys usually having a ride in every race, backing them in each of these will be a sure way of losing.

Sure, they’re the leading jockeys in Hong Kong, but it doesn’t mean that everything they ride turns to gold.

Sometimes, it all turns to poo. This happens when they have one of those off days and they get caught up in traffic and end up at the back of the bus.

So, for the start of the season and to get off to a winning start, we suggest the following:

1) Follow those who have just been granted trainers licenses, starting this season- Benno Yung and Chris So.

Both will want to start off their new careers with a bang right from the get-go as winning will attract new owners which will mean new horses to the stable plus copious amounts of good fung shui.

Pay special attention when these trainers use the top jockeys- Whyte, Purton, Doleuze, Prebble and Mosse when they’re back in town and, perhaps, Matthew “Bus Uncle” Chadwick when he’s not flying high on his Magic Bus.

These jockeys usually have a choice of rides so for them to ride something for one of these new stables is a strong pointer to their chances.

Also watch out when Vincent Ho rides for Chris So

So was Assistant Trainer to Caspar Fownes and has a good working relationship with the latter’s indentured apprentice Vincent Ho.

Those people commentating on what’s happening in a race- NOT an easy task to remember all the horses names and know where they are in a race- are called race-callers.

They are NOT called umpires, referees, actors or screamers and guys who shout- and no, we have no idea why there are no females doing this gig.

Hong Kong has one of the very best race-callers in the world in Darren Flindell.

2) We reckon Zac Purton is the jockey to follow this season, so do this, especially when he is riding for trainers Dennis Yip and Caspar Fownes.

The Crazy Horse Show has nothing to do with horse racing. We wish it did.

3) Of the three new jockeys granted licenses to ride in Hong Kong, watch out for Karis Teetan.

He has done a great deal of homework about riding in Hong Kong, we hear he’s been promised some good rides and has been given advice from Richard Fourie, the South African rider who made a huge impression here last season before receiving an offer from back home too good to refuse.

As for the two other new jockeys- Colm Donaghue and Italian Nicola Pinna- myeh.

We think they’ll plod along and find it very tough to get on good rides plus will find the tight Happy Valley track tricky to handle having never ridden there before.

By the time they understand how best to ride this track, it will be time for them to head back home with E.T.

Tipsters are supposedly those who have done hours of homework on the chances of each horse in a race and give race-goers who they rate as being their best choices. Most tipsters are crap.

The worst tipsters around are, ironically enough, jockeys.
