SATURDAY AT SHATIN

THE FASTTRACKER’S PICKS FOR TODAY

Some are still suffering from whiplash after a rather Unhappy Wednesday at the Valley where the treble paid way unders and, unbelievably, despite three or four hot pots biting the dust or whatever was going on with that track, the Six Up Bonus worth around $1.3m was still won- and by three lucky punters.

Though I really didn’t expect “sure thing”- Bundle Of Joy- to win- it opened at $7.80 to win and $2.40 to place in Oz- and despite backing one of my favorite new horses- the Caspar Fownes-trained Rainbow Chic which bumped and barged its way to win the Happy Valley Vase through a desperate ride by Vincent Ho which earned him a holiday- I was left shaking my head over the dismal performance of race favorite Mizani.

Owner Nickie Ng must have been shaking all over and Gibbo and JoJo must be suffering from lock-jaw.

Perhaps the horse didn’t like racing under lights, perhaps it needs a firm track, but jockey Richard Fourie- renamed Richard Ferrari last weekend by the screaming female emcee at Shatin- had it at the back of the field- and that’s where it stayed and stayed and stayed.

Mizani became Messani and what’s a little puzzling is the roaring silence over the run by the usual pundits.

No word either of Brett “Lucky” Davis’ cheval de nuit named “Heart Lily Talk” aka Heartily Talk, but that’s another story for another day along with some Wasabi aka Was A Bee.

But, hey, “Lucky” Davis is tipping with fresh legs these days while many of us are getting the end of the season wobbles and thinking of sipping piña coladas while Balinese beach girls give us foot massages with their feet- in Sri Lanka with some hot Danish pastries on the side.

As for today’s card, it doesn’t really bring about any strong stirrings in my loins, but with four meetings left, the trainer and jockey Premierships are getting hotter than a kitchen in Mumbai with Zac Purton, perhaps, having a chance to be all square with Dougie Whyte after race 9. Very surprisingly, he has no ride in the last despite Dennis Yip having two runners. Hmmm.

But none of his rides are real standouts and with the Durban Demon back for the last eight meetings of the season, one has to wonder if John Size is saving his big guns for Whyte to repel any Zac Attack?

Getting back to Saturday, nothing REALLY stands out anywhere and it’s all a bit of pot luck mixed with a smorgasbord on a VERY tough card where I can see no one getting the Triple Trio and everything leading to one humongous jackpot for the last meeting of the season and when every type of betting record will be smashed.

And so with very little confidence- jeez, I’m starting to sound like Deane Lester in Melbourne- but, mercifully, not like that Chris Waller sycophant known as Richie Callander- here goes nothing.

CAPTAIN JACK SPARROW

Though the good Captain’s valuable treasures sunk without trace, so did nearly everyone else’s. At least, he warned us pirates of Penzance to not fall in love with “standout” Bundle Of Joy.

(Source: Hickchic)

Today, his spies have been out and about and pigeons have come back to roost carrying messages about VICTORIOUS (r10,13) and loud whispers about NEW DEERFIELD (r10,10) in the same race. They all don’t like KEEN WONGCHOY, the race favorite- race 10, 14 on a win line and which will offer peanuts for those who monkey see and monkey do.

Elsewhere, his news is to watch the odds on NAVEL ORANGE (race 9, 9) which was moved from the stable of David Ferraris, is now with Me Tsui and has “value jockey” Howard Cheng on its back.

Remember that this cleverly named horse was purchased with the Derby in mind and is now in class 3 with some very tired and average horses.

Well, suck on that for the time being and remember to Ho Ho Ho with a good bottle of Bacardi Rum.
