The E! Entertainment channel keeps repeating a snippet featuring Johnny Depp where an interviewer screams out to the actor, “They’re screaming when you walk past them” to which he replies, “Maybe I stink?”

Every time I watch this spot, my mind turns to the CSL 1010 Million Challenge? Why?
It REALLY stinks and is such a flawed concept, I fail to understand why it plods along season after season and with zero interest to the majority of racegoers and certainly not to the Happy Wednesday Beer Garden crowd.
At least this season’s plodder finally ends with a fizzle today where the Tony Cruz-trained Cape Canaveral will be named winner of this Challenge that’s such a challenge to comprehend that no one gives a flying fuck about it.
Not even many of the leading trainers who don’t have many horses in these lower grades.

From what a trainer tried to explain, the concept has something to do with a group of horses – and not top graders- running around Happy Valley in designated racing and with points gained depending on how well they do in these races.
This season, Cape Canaveral has gained the most points which means the owner of the horse is the only real winner.
What does the public get outta this? Nada Horne.
What does CSL 1010 get? Their head of marketing gets to ring a bell to signal the start of this challenge.

Tonight at Adrenaline at Happy Valley, more bells might be rung as freeloaders show up for the tuck and stuff their faces while the CSL Marketing guru gives a speech and tells his staff what a terrific and successful Challenge it’s been and then probably ring another bell.
With all the far more effective ways in which the CSL 1010 Million Challenge marketing budget can be spent when it comes to sponsoring horse racing, this insistence in flogging such a dead horse to death is something that would have even baffled Quasimodo who might have asked, Ding Dong, anyone home?
